Umar Sadiq Set for His UEFA Champions League Debut
Nigerian forward Umar Sadiq is poised to make his debut in the UEFA Champions League tonight, on September 20, 2023.
At 8 p.m. tonight, Umar Sadiq's club, Real Sociedad, will kick off their UEFA Champions League group stage journey in Group C against the renowned Italian Serie A team, Inter Milan. The match is scheduled to take place at Reale Arena, the home ground of the "White and Blues," who are considered one of the lower-ranked teams in the competition.
This marks Real Sociedad's fifth appearance in Europe's premier competition. However, their campaign will commence with a formidable challenge against Inter Milan, a team that narrowly lost to Manchester City in the previous season's Champions League final.
Sociedad secured their place in this season's Champions League group stage by finishing last season with 71 points from 38 games and clinching fourth place in La Liga.
Coach Imanol Alguacil might opt to grant Umar Sadiq his maiden Champions League appearance. It's worth noting that Sadiq has faced considerable adversity since his move from Almeria to La Real in the summer of 2022, as he sustained a season-ending injury just weeks after joining the club.
Following his recovery from the injury, the 26-year-old Nigerian international has featured in five La Liga games, amassing 107 minutes of play without registering a goal or an assist. Despite his less-than-convincing form, Umar Sadiq is expected to take the field against Inter Milan later tonight, as he is included in Sociedad's matchday squad.
