UK lists priority subjects for immigrating teachers

The United Kingdom's Department for Education has identified the priority subjects for Nigerians and other nationals wishing to enter the country through the Teaching Regulation Agency beginning in February 2023.

According to the NIGERIANWATCH, the DfE announced in June 2022 that they will change the method they provide qualified teacher status to teachers from other countries.

According to the report, some topics that are desperately required in the UK will be prioritized.

According to the DfE, teachers from some countries can easily qualify for QTS under retained EU and domestic rules, but teachers from others cannot, even if they have equal abilities and experience.

It went on to say that the new legislation will make the process more consistent and fair, and that it will "further facilitate the flow of well-qualified teachers to the English workforce."

Announcing a new development on the visa status and how to appy, the Government of UK on its website, DfE said, "A new professional recognition service, called 'apply for qualified teacher status in England', will set consistent standards so the qualifications and experience of overseas teachers can be fairly assessed.

"Applicants with a teaching qualification from the following countries and regions (Australia, Canada, the EEA, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United States) will be able to use the new service from February 1, 2023 to check if they meet the requirements for Qualify Teacher Status and apply."

It went on to say that "applicants from Ghana, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and India with a subject specialism in languages, mathematics, or science and a teaching qualification to teach 11 to 16-year-olds will be able to use the service to check if they meet the requirements for QTS and also apply."

In terms of priority subjects, the DfE stated that "a teaching qualification that meets the standard of a level 6 qualification qualifying you to teach children aged 11 to 16, and a bachelor's degree that includes at least 50% mathematics, science, or a language (other than English) taught in English state schools."

The priority subjects, excluding English Language, are French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish, according to the DfE.

It did, however, add that an update on other subject specializations will be provided by May.
