Tuchel has to win World Cup for England, says Shearer

Alan Shearer believes that Thomas Tuchel needs to secure a World Cup victory in 2026 to validate his selection as the new manager of the English national team.

The Three Lions' former captain emphasized that England has not clinched a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup, and came close to ending that drought under Tuchel's predecessor, Gareth Southgate. Southgate resigned after the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain and also led the team to the Euro 2020 final, 2022 World Cup quarter-finals, and 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Tuchel, who was recently appointed as the third foreign manager of the English men’s side, will inherit a talented squad, including players like Harry Kane from Bayern Munich and Jude Bellingham from Real Madrid.

With an impressive track record of winning major trophies at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich, Tuchel led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021 and won league titles at Bayern and PSG. Alan Shearer stressed the importance of winning a trophy and delivering results, stating that Tuchel has an impressive CV but faces a different test with England. The appointment of Tuchel has sparked some criticism due to the decision not to hire an English coach.

England's under-21 coach, Lee Carsley, will continue to lead the team for upcoming Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. Former England striker Gary Lineker expressed his belief that Tuchel has recognized the abundance of talent in the squad and sees an opportunity to win the World Cup. Gary Lineker also mentioned that he would have preferred to give the job to Carsley, emphasizing the trust and creativity he brings.

The lack of outstanding English candidates for the role has been noted, with the last homegrown manager to win the English top-flight division being Howard Wilkinson in 1992. Despite links to the role, Graham Potter and Eddie Howe were not strong English candidates, and the FA reportedly reached out to Manchester City’s Spanish manager Pep Guardiola.

Former England defender Micah Richards expressed the opinion that Tuchel, as an outstanding and proven winner, is the best person for the job.
