Tinubu nominates Melvin Ayogu to CBN board, seeks confirmation

President Bola Tinubu has formally nominated Professor Melvin D. Ayogu to the Central Bank of Nigeria's Board of Directors and has asked the Senate to confirm his appointment.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, via his official X account.

"President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate, requesting confirmation of Prof. Melvin Ayogu's appointment to the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) Board of Directors." , Onanuga wrote on his X account.

Tinubu also sought Senate confirmation for Nwakuche Ndidi as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The requests, which were made in letters to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, were read during Tuesday's plenary session.

In February 2024, President Bola Tinubu appointed Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Murtala Sagaley, Urom Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu to the CBN Board.

However, on February 29, 2024, the Senate confirmed four of the nominees after Urom Eke declined, citing a "conflict of interest."

Recall that the CBN reportedly urged financial institutions to strengthen their compliance frameworks and align with global banking standards in order to combat illicit financial flows and protect the financial system's integrity.

This call was made by the Central Bank of Nigeria on February 28, 2025, at the Mandatory Compliance and Anti-Money Laundering Training Workshop in Lagos, which was organized in collaboration with Citi.
