Tinubu, sports minister laud D’Tigress on historic Olympics achievement
President Bola Tinubu congratulated Nigeria's D'Tigress on reaching the women's basketball quarterfinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.D'Tigress defeated Canada 79-70 in the final Group B match of the Women's Basketball Tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in France.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the president's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the president praised "the team for their uncommon demonstration of resilience, teamwork, and diligence."
Tinubu commended "the coach and managers of the team for their dutifulness and dedication," and he asked "the brave Tigress not to rest on their oars until the final victory is won."
According to the statement, the president "assures the team and the entire Nigerian contingent at the 2024 Olympics of his support as they fly the nation's flag at the global sports event."
In addition, Sports Minister John Enoh complimented D'Tigress on their stunning triumph over Canada.
In a tweet on X.com, the minister, known as #OwanEnoh, described the team's victory as a "groundbreaking accomplishment."

His tweet said in part, "Dear D'Tigress, today marks a historic achievement. You made history as the first African team (male or female) to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.
"Despite being placed 12th, you defeated FIBA's third and fifth-place teams, exhibiting remarkable talent. Your triumph has brought delight to all Nigerians."
Rene Wakama's team won 55-46 in the third quarter before sealing the historic 9-point victory.
Enoh also praised Favour Ofili's remarkable qualification for the women's 200-metre semi-final at the Olympics.
Ofili won heat 6 of the event in a season-best 22.24 seconds, advancing to the semi-finals ahead of Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith and Gambia's Gina Bass-Bittaye.
"We commend you. Ofili Favour Chukwuka, your determination and talent come through. Overcoming hurdles, you performed admirably in the heat. We congratulate your joint success and encourage you to go for gold. Continue to excel!" Enoh tweeted.
