Three arrested for match-fixing in Kenya

Three people have been arrested in an investigation into a suspected match-fixing syndicate in Kenyan leagues, according to the Football Kenya Federation on Saturday.

The arrests come as Kenya's leagues face increased scrutiny for match-fixing and player corruption in FKF-sanctioned competitions.

One Kenyan and two foreigners were arrested for being "involved in issuing bribes and match-fixing," according to FKF chief Barry Otieno, who did not reveal their names.

"Due to the sensitivity of the case, FKF will not make any further comments on the matter until the investigations are completed."

Otieno stated that the federation was committed to ensuring the sport's integrity and was collaborating with local and international law enforcement to prosecute the individuals.

Kenyan leagues have been suspended in recent months as part of a national investigation into match-fixing in football for betting purposes.

Two players from Nairobi-based Mathare United were barred from participating in any football-related activities last month pending the completion of investigations into their suspected involvement in the match-fixing syndicate.

In January, FKF suspended 14 other players and two coaches for match-fixing after receiving a tip about cheating in the national league.

Six players from Zoo Kericho FC, which was found guilty of match-fixing by FIFA's integrity unit in 2021 and expelled from the Kenyan Premier League, were among those suspended.

FIFA banned four Kenyan players, including one for life, in February 2020 for their roles in a "international conspiracy" to fix league matches.
