The NFF cites a lack of funds as the reason for being unable to terminate Peseiro's contract
Executive committee member Nse Essien of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) stated that Coach Jose Peseiro would be dismissed if the NFF had the financial means to settle his contract. This decision comes in the wake of two disappointing performances in World Cup qualifiers, with Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup at significant risk following two draws in their initial qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Walter Musona netted directly from a free kick, giving Zimbabwe the lead in the first half, while Leicester forward Kelechi Iheanacho leveled the score midway through the second half.
Portuguese coach Peseiro faces criticism for the Super Eagles' sluggish start to qualification, with NFF member Essien expressing dissatisfaction, stating, "If we had the financial means for compensation, we would consider relieving him of his job. We are not pleased. The call for the head coach's dismissal is widespread, and our situation is precarious with only two points from a possible six."
South Africa currently leads Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with three points. They are anticipated to extend their lead on Tuesday against Rwanda, while Lesotho hosts Benin in South Africa.
Nigeria, having failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, holds two points from two matches. The qualifiers will resume in June 2024, with Nigeria aiming to recover lost ground when hosting South Africa in Uyo, followed by a challenging trip to Benin.
