The Minister of Sports has landed in Egypt to present a bid for hosting the AFCON 2027 tournament
On Tuesday, Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, along with representatives from the Nigeria Football Federation, touched down in Egypt to submit a bid for hosting the AFCON tournament in 2027. This appointment as Minister of Sports Development was made by President Bola Tinubu on August 16.
In a post shared via Enoh's official social media account, he announced, "I have arrived in Cairo, Egypt, accompanied by representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). We are here to participate in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee meeting, representing the Nigerian Government."
Elaborating on the purpose of their visit to Egypt, he added, "Our presence here is in connection with the joint bid submitted by Nigeria and the Benin Republic to host AFCON in 2027. Other governments and member associations vying for the opportunity to host AFCON in 2027 will also be in attendance.
"Before this gathering, the Independent Assessment Committees of CAF conducted visits to all the nations competing for the privilege to host this continental tournament. These visits aimed to evaluate their preparedness."
"As part of the assessment procedure, every bidding nation is required to deliver a 10-minute presentation, followed by an additional 15 minutes allocated for addressing any ensuing questions.
"Subsequently, a thorough report will be presented for evaluation and deliberation by the CAF Executive Committee. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. We are optimistic about a favorable outcome for the joint bid from Nigeria and Benin Republic," he announced.
Nigeria has hosted the AFCON only once, in 1980, under the leadership of Christian Chukwu, resulting in a triumphant victory in front of fervent home supporters, including former President Shehu Shagari.
However, the joint hosting with Ghana concluded on a less joyful note as Cameroon's Indomitable Lions clinched the trophy at the National Stadium in Lagos, leading to disappointment for the host nation.
