Super Eagles' Head Coach José Peseiro Renews Contract with Nigeria Football Federation
Following a period of negotiations and uncertainties, José Peseiro, the head coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles, has extended his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation.
José Peseiro assumed the role of head coach for the Super Eagles in 2022, during which he received mixed reviews and faced criticism for the team's performance. Nevertheless, he successfully secured the Super Eagles' qualification for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a match to spare.
Leading up to the final qualification match against São Tomé and Príncipe on Sunday, September 10, veteran Super Eagles player Kenneth Omeruo expressed uncertainty about the team's coaching situation, saying, "We don't know who will be the Coach in the next Super Eagles game."
Towards the end of the previous month, there were rumors that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was in negotiations with Augustine Eguavoen to potentially replace José Peseiro in an interim role, given that Peseiro's contract had expired. This speculation sparked controversy among Nigerian football enthusiasts due to Eguavoen's previous unsuccessful stint in the last AFCON and his failure to qualify Nigeria for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
However, all these speculations have been put to rest, as the NFF confirmed in a statement on Sunday that an agreement had been reached with José Peseiro ahead of the Sunday match. The Portuguese coach has also revealed his lineup for the upcoming game.
It has been reported that José Peseiro accepted a reduction in his monthly salary, which previously stood at around $70,000. The NFF has set a target for him to lead the Super Eagles to at least the semi-finals of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, scheduled to begin on January 13, 2024.
While Peseiro's salary has been reduced, his responsibilities have expanded, as he has been tasked with overseeing the Super Eagles B Team, which means Salisu Yusuf will no longer serve in that capacity.
As of now, the specific duration of José Peseiro's contract has not been publicly disclosed, and his performance in Ivory Coast, along with that of his team, may influence whether he continues to lead the team in the future.
