Robertson targets a comeback to Liverpool following shoulder surgery
Andy Robertson is poised to join the Liverpool squad for Wednesday's League Cup semi-final against Fulham as the Scottish defender progresses in his recovery from a shoulder injury. The damage occurred in a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon during Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifying defeat in October.
Following the surgery, the 29-year-old may be on the verge of making a return after a considerable period on the sidelines.
"Let's begin with Robbo because he trained with the team yesterday," stated Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders on Tuesday.
"It’s now 13 weeks; he had his meeting with the surgeon to ensure everything is right for full contact — it’s clear.
"He underwent extensive work and effective rehab throughout the last period, making him fit from a sports science perspective. Now, he has to regain fitness through proper team training."
Lijnders further commented, "So, that’s a significant advantage to have him back. We've been awaiting his return for a long time; he’s one of our captains.
"I just met him in the canteen, and he said, 'Pep, I have my tracksuit with me!' So, he’s pushing himself into the squad, which is good. He will travel to Fulham."
Premier League leaders Liverpool will head to London with a 2-1 advantage from the first leg at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp’s side extended their lead to five points at the top of the league, despite Mohamed Salah being on Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, with a 4-0 win at Bournemouth on Sunday.
