Regulatory constraints could compel Forest to offload Awoniyi

To prevent another violation of the Premier League's financial regulations, Nottingham Forest, facing relegation, might have to consider selling Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi by the end of the summer.

On Tuesday, Forests received a four-point deduction for violating the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules. They admitted breaching the PSR by £34.5m, exceeding the permitted threshold of £61m. To avoid further breaches next season, the club may need to sell one of their top players in the summer. Consequently, Taiwo Awoniyi has been identified as one of the players that club co-owner Evangelos Marinakis might be compelled to sell ahead of the next season.

In June 2022, Awoniyi made a club-record move to the Tricky Trees from Union Berlin for a fee reportedly around £17.5m.

Since joining the Premier League club, he has emerged as a vital player and a favorite among fans. Despite enduring two injury-hit seasons, the Nigerian forward has maintained his status as Forest's top scorer, tallying 16 goals over the course of two campaigns.

This season, the 26-year-old has netted six goals, just three behind Chris Wood, the current top scorer for the club. Premier League sides Newcastle, West Ham, and Southampton, along with FC Schalke 04, have all shown interest in the former Liverpool striker, who is also a Super Eagles player. With Forest's recent four-point deduction, they've slipped into the relegation zone, now sitting in 18th place, trailing Luton Town by one point, as they head into the final nine games of the season.
