Nigerian Sprinter Amusan Encouraged to Excel at World Championships, Aliu Advises

Deji Aliu, former Olympic medal-winning sprinter from Nigeria, has called on Tobi Amusan to prepare herself for a strong performance at the upcoming 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Aliu urged Amusan to move past the suspension situation involving the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

After a majority decision by the panel of the Disciplinary Tribunal, it was determined that Amusan had not committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) through three Whereabouts Failures within a year. Consequently, her provisional suspension has been immediately lifted.

Aliu expressed his satisfaction with the decision coming ahead of the World Championships, allowing Amusan to compete without any hindrance. He acknowledged that the incident could impact her mindset, but he expects her to overcome it and deliver a commendable performance.

Aliu emphasized the importance of Amusan's name being cleared and wished Team Nigeria success. He highlighted that being a part of the team itself is a victory, and winning a medal would be an additional accomplishment.

Deji Aliu's notable achievements include winning the 100 meters event at the 2003 All-Africa Games and securing fourth place at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He was also a member of the Nigerian relay team that earned a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics, alongside Innocent Asonze, Francis Obikwelu, and Daniel Effiong.
