Jerry Okorodudu, former Nigerian boxer, passes away in a Lagos hospital
A renowned Nigerian boxer, Jeremiah Okorodudu, has passed away. He died on Wednesday evening at a private hospital in Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos, where he had been undergoing treatment for partial stroke and foot cancer.
His wife, Mrs. Adenike Okorodudu, confirmed his demise, stating that his condition deteriorated on Wednesday afternoon, and despite the doctors' efforts to revive him, they were unsuccessful.
Last week, the family of the former Olympian reached out to Nigerians, appealing for financial assistance as they faced the imminent risk of his discharge from the Lawanson private hospital due to the lack of funds to cover his medical expenses and outstanding bills.
Previously, Okorodudu had passionately pleaded with Nigerian sports enthusiasts not to witness his painful and agonizing demise.
Additionally, it is worth noting that the appointment of the former accomplished boxer as an assistant boxing coach was terminated by the Ministry of Sports. The promise made by the former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, to reinstate the former flamboyant middleweight boxing champion in the Ministry remained unfulfilled.
At one point, Dare instructed the former African queen of the tracks, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi, to address Jerry's situation, but no tangible action was taken. Jerry, before his demise, expressed his disappointment at the lack of communication from Dare or Onyali.
