Giroud extends Milan deal till 2024

Olivier Giroud signed a one-year extension with AC Milan through 2024 on Wednesday, a day after scoring the goal that advanced his team to the Champions League semifinals.

"AC Milan is proud to announce that Olivier Giroud has renewed his contract with the club," the Italian club said in a brief statement.

The Italian champions confirmed to AFP that the veteran French forward's contract expires at the conclusion of the 2019-20 campaign.

Milan won their all-Italian Champions League quarter-final 2-1 on aggregate thanks to a goal from Giroud in Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Napoli.

"I'm very proud, very happy… the ideal way to celebrate last night, Giroud told Sky Sport shortly following the announcement.

Milan could now face Inter Milan in the quarterfinals as their local rivals lead by two goals heading into Wednesday's second leg against Benfica.

Giroud, France's all-time leading scorer, has scored 27 goals since joining Milan from Chelsea at the beginning of last season.

The 36-year-old was instrumental in Milan's first Serie A championship in 11 years, which they won in May, and has scored a number of crucial goals for the club.

Milan is currently positioned fourth in Serie A, 22 points behind league leaders Napoli.
