Ex-Chelsea star Mata joins San Diego FC as club partner
Former Chelsea and Manchester United player, Juan Mata, has become a part of the ownership group at San Diego FC as a club partner.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, this development makes the Spanish icon the first active international soccer player to hold a stake in MLS, joining David Beckham as the second international player involved in MLS ownership.
Mata has been playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League since last September.
Expressing his excitement about the agreement, the 36-year-old stated, “I am very grateful to the ownership group for giving me the opportunity to be the first active player to co-own a club in this league and the second ever after David Beckham. It is truly a privilege.
“It goes without saying that the Right to Dream philosophy in our beloved sport is distinctive, emphasizing purpose in everything they undertake, and I am thrilled to continue my journey of using football as a means for social change alongside the Right to Dream community.
“I view this move as a chance to help create something truly remarkable in a city and a league that are experiencing tremendous growth, and I am eager to be involved and dedicate myself to the positive social impact that aligns with the club’s and my vision of the beautiful game,” the post conveyed.
