Meeting in Aso Rock: Tinubu and Islamic Leaders Discuss Niger Coup
At the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu is presently engaged in discussions with a delegation of Nigerian Muslim leaders (Ulama), led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.
It's worth noting that a coalition of Islamic leaders had recently volunteered to mediate between the coup leaders in Niger Republic and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This initiative received President Tinubu's endorsement.
They visited Niger to engage with the head of the junta, General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
These Islamic scholars advised against employing military force by ECOWAS.
President Tinubu, as the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, is anticipated to receive a report from the Islamic leaders about their discussions with the military junta's representatives and their counterparts in Niger Republic, pertaining to the ongoing political crisis.
ECOWAS has expressed its disapproval of the military takeover in Niger through a series of sanctions and an ultimatum, which includes the threat of a potential armed response.
The regional body insists that the military junta reinstates the democratically-elected President.
The Ulama are in opposition to the prospect of conflict with the Nigerien military, as indicated by ECOWAS.
They underscored that besides the severe consequences of armed confrontation, their religious faith and the Quran encourage them to prioritize mediation in such situations before resorting to war.
