Calls for Reconciliation in Edo PDP Amid Concerns Over Potential Impact on 2024 Election
Prince Francis Omo-Osunde Iyasere, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has emphasized the need for reconciliation among party leaders, cautioning that the ongoing internal crisis could impede the party's success in the upcoming 2024 election in the state.
Speaking to journalists in Benin on Sunday, October 8, 2023, Iyasere, who previously served as the State Publicity Secretary of the party, urged PDP leaders to prioritize peaceful reconciliation. He stressed that the unnecessary internal strife could negatively impact the party's image and reduce its chances of winning the gubernatorial election next year.
"It is time to put an end to the internal conflicts within the party so that we do not lose sight of the bigger goal of winning the governorship election next year. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has, in the last eight years, proven itself as a reckless, anti-masses party that has increased the hardships of Nigerians in all aspects of life," said Iyasere.
"In Edo State, we, the PDP, as a more viable and well-established, pro-people party, must strategically position ourselves to attract the disenchanted masses of Nigerians seeking more favorable alternatives. This should be our focus, not continuous internal wrangling," he added.
Iyasere urged the party to effectively manage its internal crises, emphasizing that no political party is immune to disagreements. He stressed the importance of quickly resolving conflicts in the greater interest of the party's stability, strength, and electoral success.
Furthermore, Iyasere criticized certain party members who engage in indecorous behavior, speaking ill or sponsoring malicious comments against respected party leaders working towards reconciliation. He called for unity and support for leaders like the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Osarodion Ogie, and Edo South senatorial district leader, Owere Dickson Imasogie, who are dedicated to bringing lasting reconciliation and sanity to the party.
"It is unwise and unacceptable for us to be fighting amongst ourselves less than a year before a major election. The PDP is a leadership party, and we should respect and trust our leaders to provide direction, especially in times of crisis," he concluded.
