Cross River elections tribunal chair promises fairness
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, the chairman of the Cross River State Elections Petitions Tribunal, says the panel will be fair to all parties.
He made the assurance during the panel's inaugural meeting on Wednesday in Calabar. Justice Z. U. Modibbo (Member 1) and Justice Eva Okoronkwo (Member 11) were present at the inaugural sitting with Justice Adeniyi.
"The tribunal is not a battleground," said Justice Adeniyi, "and we will proceed smoothly and without delay."
"We will perform our duties to the best of our abilities while keeping the oath we took in mind."
"We assure all litigants of a fair trial, and we will not entertain any form of interference from any quarter, and we will report any attempt to interfere with the tribunal to the security agencies," the tribunal said, adding that the tribunal was time-conscious and urged everyone to work together to complete the task successfully.
Murtala Abdul-Rasheed, SAN, who also spoke, stated that the Nigerian people and the international community would be watching how the tribunal carried out its mandate.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association's Calabar Branch, Attah Ochinke, assured the tribunal that members of the association would conduct themselves professionally during the tribunal's sittings.
