EU commits €46m to boost social protection in Nigeria
The European Union has pledged €46 million to support Nigeria's social protection system under the "Sustainable Social Protection System in Nigeria" program.Launched at the United Nations House in Abuja, this three-year initiative aims to strengthen social safety nets in four states: Abia, Benue, Oyo, and Sokoto.
Osagie Jacobs J.I, Director of Information & Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, announced on Friday that the initiative was developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the EU.
The primary goal of the program is to improve the National Social Protection Register so that it can be used to allocate resources and implement policies more effectively.
The program aims to improve the shock responsiveness of Nigeria's social protection system at both the federal and state levels, thereby increasing preparedness for economic and social crises affecting vulnerable populations.
It is consistent with the government's commitment to targeted, data-driven interventions that ensure social protection programs effectively reach the most vulnerable communities.
The EU's investment demonstrates its ongoing commitment to supporting social welfare initiatives in Nigeria.
Over the years, it has funded a variety of humanitarian and social protection programs aimed at reducing poverty, improving healthcare, and strengthening governance.
The Sustainable Social Protection System in Nigeria program seeks to create a more inclusive and resilient social assistance framework, ensuring that vulnerable groups receive adequate support during economic downturns and crises.
