Nigerians' Expenditure on Calls and Data in 2022 Reaches N3.33 Trillion, According to NCC

Nigerians and other telecommunications users in Nigeria expended a total of N3.33 trillion on services like calls, data, SMS, and other telecom offerings throughout 2022, as revealed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

This coincided with telecom companies amassing a total revenue of N3.33 trillion for the same year. These insights were unveiled in the recently published '2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report' by the NCC.

The report further states that the cumulative count of active subscribers surged from 195,463,898 subscriptions in 2021 to 222,571,568 active voice subscriptions by December 2022, signifying a notable 13.86 percent year-on-year increase.

In response to this growth, the NCC explained, "The boost in the subscriber base of the operators can be attributed to several factors, including customer loyalty, promotional activities, seasonal impacts, vigorous customer acquisition campaigns, and competitive product offerings across all networks."

The report highlighted that the expansion in active subscriptions had a favorable influence on related telecommunications metrics including teledensity, Internet penetration, and broadband penetration.

Additionally, the upward trend in data consumption persisted throughout 2022, experiencing a remarkable growth of 46.77 percent, reaching a total of 518,381.78TB by year-end.

The NCC remarked, "A discernible rise in data consumption volume was observed at the conclusion of December 2022, when contrasted with the same period in December 2021."

"Subscribers collectively consumed a total data volume of 518,381.78TB by December 2022, marking a substantial surge from the 353,118.89TB recorded in December 2021. This translates to a significant 46.77 percent escalation in data usage over this timeframe."
