NITT's Initiative: Easing Fuel-Hike Burden through Autogas Conversion for Petrol-Powered Vehicles

The primary objective of the conversion initiative is to ease the financial strain caused by soaring petrol prices, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.

Amidst the ongoing fuel price hike in Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) has taken proactive measures to support citizens. It is organizing workshops nationwide to facilitate the conversion of petrol-powered vehicles to autogas, offering relief to the general public.

Bayero Salih-Farah, the Director-General of NITT, has disclosed that the institute has been diligently working on a project for a year and is now ready to initiate the conversion process within the next two to three weeks.

The primary goal of the conversion initiative is to address the financial strain caused by high petrol prices by offering an affordable and eco-friendly alternative. According to Salih-Farah, NITT has collaborated with conversion kit manufacturers to make these kits available at their workshops. This will enable Nigerians to convert their petrol-powered vehicles to autogas at a reasonable cost.

Dr. Salih-Farah emphasized, "We have extensively engaged with various stakeholders across the country to emphasize the need for Nigerians to transition from PMS to gas. Gas is remarkably cost-effective compared to petrol; it is also cleaner and more convenient. Through this conversion, Nigerians will be able to save a considerable amount of money by switching their vehicles from petrol to autogas."

He further clarified that embracing autogas as an alternative fuel option would result in a notable reduction in transportation costs, as refueling a tank with autogas would be approximately 40% cheaper than using petrol. This cost-effectiveness is expected to significantly improve the daily lives of citizens and alleviate the financial burden of fuel expenses.

In addition to the economic advantages, the transition to autogas will also make a substantial contribution to environmental conservation. Salih-Farah stressed that adopting autogas would lead to a considerable reduction in environmental pollution in the country, making it an eco-friendly choice for vehicle owners.

The Director-General of NITT passionately appealed to Nigerians to seize the opportunity provided by this initiative, which not only offers financial relief but also plays a vital role in promoting sustainable and cleaner transportation practices.
