Google, by means of its charitable division Google.org, revealed today a significant ₦‎1.2 billion grant designated for "Mind the Gap," unveiling an initiative with the objective of providing essential digital skills to 20,000 women and youth in Nigeria.

This investment is in line with the ambitious commitment of the Federal Government of Nigeria to generate 1 million digital jobs. The program will provide training across a range of fields, including data science, artificial intelligence, web development, and mobile app development, utilizing both online and in-person teaching methods. Open to individuals from all corners of Nigeria, the initiative aims to engage those with a strong interest in digital technology, a promising academic background, and a dedication to uplifting their communities.

Kashim Shettima, the Vice President, stated, "We need to explore innovative approaches and create pathways for increased job opportunities. As a nation, we must turn words into actions. It's easy to discuss ambitious plans, but the real challenge is turning these concepts into reality. This undertaking comprises three key components. The initial one is the 'Digital Onboarders Program,' designed to provide essential digital skills to 5,000 unemployed, out-of-school youth. Subsequently, these individuals will be assimilated into consumer-centric enterprises spanning 12 states within Nigeria.

The 'Arewa Tech4Ladies' initiative will facilitate digital education for women in four semi-urban and rural communities in Kaduna State. This effort aims to train 5,000 women and girls in subjects like data science and artificial intelligence. The final pillar of the project is the Engage Nigeria program, which intends to provide training and mentorship for 10,000 exceptionally talented young individuals across the country, bolstering the burgeoning creative industry.
