Nasarawa Residents Vow to Sustain Protests for Electoral Justice

Women, youths, and other residents of Nasarawa State have vowed to persist in their demonstrations, seeking justice for those who supported the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) governorship candidate, David Ombugadu, in the March 18, 2023 election.

Despite accusations from the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the PDP is inciting political, ethnic, and religious unrest in the state, the protesters are determined to express their concerns.

One protester, Sarah Danjuma, clarified during a media interaction in Lafia on Wednesday that the group consists mainly of widows, aged women, and concerned citizens who feel oppressed by the political situation in the state.

She emphasized that their protests aim to challenge the Court of Appeal's decision in Abuja, which validated the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule. According to her, the residents believe their votes were unfairly appropriated by state politicians in favor of Sule.

Danjuma denied allegations of sponsorship by the PDP, asserting that they stand in solidarity with Ombugadu, and their protests are self-driven. She highlighted the sacrifices made by the protesters, such as selling farm produce to fund their demonstrations and providing transportation for participants.

Addressing electoral irregularities, Danjuma cited specific instances in Gayam and Chiroma wards in Lafia Local Government Area, where discrepancies in accredited voters and reported votes raised concerns. She called on the justices to scrutinize the election results carefully and base their judgment on the merit of the matter rather than technicalities.
