Meta’s head of AI research, Joelle Pineau, quits

Joelle Pineau, the leader of Meta's Artificial Intelligence research division, has announced her intention to leave the company at the end of May, representing a notable exit during a period of rapid expansion and competition in the AI sector.

Pineau has been part of Meta for eight years and has headed the company’s Fundamental AI Research since 2023. In a LinkedIn update on Tuesday, she indicated that her final day would be May 30. During her time at Meta, Pineau played a crucial role in the creation of several important AI projects currently utilized by Meta’s various teams. These projects include PyTorch, FAISS, Roberta, Dino, Llama, SAM, Codegen, and Audiobox, among others.

“In light of the significant changes occurring in the world, the increasing momentum of the AI race, and Meta’s preparations for its next phase, it is essential to make room for others to engage in this work,” Pineau expressed in her post.

Her resignation occurs at a time when Meta is heavily investing in AI, seeking to broaden and enhance its AI capabilities. Last year, the company reorganized its AI division to better incorporate cutting-edge technologies into its products and services, aiming to unify its AI research initiatives and streamline the process of developing new innovations.
