Intel’s new CEO outlines vision for leaner, more innovative future
Lip-Bu Tan, Intel's new CEO, unveiled his vision for a more agile and innovative version of the storied American chipmaker during his first public remarks on Monday.Addressing the company's "Vision" event in Las Vegas, Tan emphasised a hands-on approach, promising to collaborate closely with engineers to develop new products based on customer feedback.
Tan, who became Intel's CEO earlier this month, takes over at a critical juncture in the company's history. Intel was once dominant in both personal computers and data centre servers, but it has recently lost ground to rivals such as NVIDIA.
In his speech, Tan acknowledged Intel's difficulties, admitting that the company had failed to meet customer expectations. He encouraged attendees to give unfiltered feedback, saying, "Please be brutally honest with us. This is what I expect from you this week, and I believe that critical feedback is the most valuable."
Tan's leadership strategy involves streamlining Intel's organisational structure. Reuters previously reported that he intends to eliminate what he sees as a slow and overburdened middle management layer.
Tan reaffirmed his commitment to empowering engineers, stating that Intel has stifled innovation in recent years. "We're going to really drive some new ideas, giving engineers freedom to innovate from within," he told me. "My weekends are typically filled with engineers and architects. They have brilliant ideas and want to change the world, which is why I'm excited to work closely with them.
Tan's top priority will be to attract and retain talent. "We lost a lot of talent. That's my top priority—to bring back some of the best talent in the industry and rejoin or join Intel," he said.
As Intel navigates an increasingly competitive semiconductor landscape, Tan's leadership will be scrutinised to see if his streamlined approach and renewed emphasis on innovation can help the company regain footing.
