Afenifere urges Tinubu to fulfill his commitment to federalism

Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has raised apprehensions regarding President Bola Tinubu's apparent lack of dedication to actualizing true federalism in the country, despite his previous position as the Governor of Lagos State.

The Yoruba group emphasized that as the President and a prominent figure in national politics, Tinubu should leverage his influence to ensure the execution of recommendations put forth during the 2014 National Conference.

Following its monthly meeting at Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, the hometown of its leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the group issued a communiqué. It called on the Federal Government to summon the courage to align and reconcile the resolutions of the 2014 National Conference with the reports of the APC (El-Rufai) Committee on Federalism.

The group affirmed that essential measures have been established to mobilize and energize Nigerians in the pursuit of achieving federalism. It further urged other well-meaning organizations and citizens to join forces and prepare for the initiative to ensure the realization of true federalism.

The group claimed that the appointment of officials by the Presidency to the National Electoral Commission (INEC) lacked transparency. It urged the government to guarantee fairness and inclusivity in the selection process, emphasizing the significance of having independent and impartial individuals in crucial roles within the electoral body. Such appointments, it stressed, play a crucial role in determining the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.

Additionally, Afenifere emphasized its solidarity with Nigerians in the face of the current economic challenges, including the soaring costs of goods, services, and energy.

Meanwhile, Afenifere has appointed Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo as its new National Publicity Secretary, following a prior suspension.

The group stated, "Adejumo, an alumnus of the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and a native of Ibadan, holding the traditional title of Mogaji Ikolaba, now serves as the National Publicity Secretary of the Yoruba Summit Group and is a member of the National Caucus of Afenifere."
