World Bank names Ajay Banga as sole nominee for president
The Bayelsa State government says it is working diligently to repair and expand the state's road infrastructure network, as well as to repair and reopen all roads that were damaged or destroyed by the catastrophic floods of 2022.
This was stated by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Ayibaina Duba, in an interview with members of the press following an inspection tour of roads undergoing rehabilitation and construction in various regions of the state.
The assessment tour was conducted by Duba and his Works and Infrastructure counterpart, Moses Teibowei. Duba expressed regret that some local governments had not been connected by roads since 1996, when Bayelsa was carved out of the old Rivers State.
Onuebum-Otuoke road, which connects Bayelsa East senatorial district; Imiringi road; Elebele road diversion, where two iron bridges are being replaced with concrete culverts; Opokuma-Sabagreia road; Amassoma road (with three large culverts); Igbedi road extension; and the Outer Ring road, in addition to the Labour Centre Complex building in the state capital are among the project sites.
He stated that the administration led by Governor Douye Diri was "responsible and responsive" to the concerns of the state's citizens and would not relent in its efforts to reach its goals.
Duba stated, "We are taking this action because, as we have always maintained, we wish to connect Bayelsa State. It is unfortunate that, despite our contributions to the Federation, there are still local governments that are not connected by a road network.
"As a responsible and responsive government, we find this inadmissible. We must build roads between these communities. As a government, we will continue to build these roads for the benefit of the people. We will persevere until the goal is reached."
The Works and Infrastructure Commissioner added that the decision to construct and re-construct road infrastructure was made and approved by the state executive council, which Governor Diri presided over.
Teibowei, while describing the scope of work at the Onuebum-Otuoke road, stated: "It is a road that is perennially flooded, so we determined that it is necessary to raise the road from its current level to about two meters, install culverts where necessary, and ensure that it can be used on a continuous basis regardless of the season.
He continued, "On the Sagbama-Ekeremor road, before and after Bolou-Orua, we are ensuring that remedial work is completed so that there are no issues during the next flood season.
"We will also be rehabilitating the road from Sagbama to Tungbo; the contract has not yet been awarded, but cost estimates have been completed, and we anticipate that a contract will be awarded next week to do so.
There are also other jobs being performed in various locations throughout the state. The state executive council has approved new projects, which will be forwarded to the Central Procurement Board for contract awarding."
Teibowei added that the government had conducted cost estimates for rehabilitation work on internal roads within the metropolis of Yenagoa, and that the contractor for the Trofani road had also mobilized to the site.
He expressed confidence that all the projects would be completed by July of this year at the latest, and added that the administration would announce the total kilometers of major roads and internal roads being constructed within a few days.
