Woman in Ogun detained for tossing her five-month-old daughter into a river

The Ogun State Police Command announced on Monday that on Sunday, its operatives apprehended Olubunmi Ajayi, a 30-year-old woman, for attempting to drown her five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, in the RSS River in Sagamu.

According to a statement from SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, a passerby named Olusola Sonaya assisted in rescuing the baby after her mother threw her into the water.

Following the incident, the baby was urgently taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for medical attention.

As of the time this report was filed, she was reportedly in a stable condition.

The statement mentioned, "A five-month-old infant, Imole Anifowose, is presently in stable condition, thanks to the intervention of Olusola Sonaya, a male resident of RSS River Sagamu, who prevented a planned drowning by the mother.

"On the 21st of January 2024 at approximately 17:30 hrs, an attempted murder case unfolded when a humanitarian observed Oluwabunmi Ajayi, a 30-year-old female, dropping her infant into the river."

"The individual who witnessed her act of dropping the child into the river quickly rushed to the scene, rescuing the baby from the brink of drowning.

"The infant was promptly transported to OOUTH for urgent medical examination and attention, and fortunately, was reported to have survived the traumatic incident.

"The mother has been apprehended and is currently under observation to evaluate her mental health. Attempts are underway to reach out to her relatives or husband to ensure the baby's proper care and welfare at the hospital."
