UPDATE: UK's interior minister Braverman dismissed
In a Monday reshuffle preceding an anticipated general election next year, British leader Rishi Sunak removed the controversial interior minister Suella Braverman from her position. Sunak, who faced increasing pressure to dismiss Braverman, known for her outspoken right-wing stance, took action amid heightened tensions during pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests in Britain.
The successor to Braverman is not immediately apparent, as she was appointed to the post just over a year ago when Sunak assumed the role of prime minister.
Following her dismissal, Braverman expressed, "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary." She noted that she would provide further statements in due course.
The dismissal coincides with the ruling Conservatives confirming a significant reshuffle of Rishi Sunak's top ministers, marking his first since assuming leadership on October 25, 2022.
"Here we go," announced the party on X, formerly Twitter.
"Today, @RishiSunak enhances his government team to make enduring decisions for a brighter future. Stay tuned for the latest."
The anticipated changes, to be revealed throughout the morning, are anticipated to recognize loyalists and emerging younger Members of Parliament, a move seen as a response to the impact of nearly 14 years in power on the Tories' popularity.
