Two individuals have been arraigned by the police for the theft of N6 million worth of wood

On Thursday, two men, William Offor and Syprien Azangbe, were brought before a Lagos State Magistrates' Court at Ebute-Metta, following an allegation of stealing wood worth N6 million.

The defendants, Offor and Azangbe, are being charged with conspiracy and stealing, as brought against them by the police.

According to Inspector Olatunde Kehinde, the prosecutor, the defendants, along with others still at large, conspired to commit the offense and stole wood valued at N6 million, which belonged to Olanrewaju Tajudeen and Akudo Omotayo.

Kehinde stated that the incident occurred on July 19, 2022, at No. 150, Abeokuta Street, in the Ebute-Metta area of the state.

The prosecutor explained that the offense committed violated Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

During the initial reading and translation of the charge in Yoruba, the defendants pleaded guilty to the first count but pleaded not guilty to the second count.

However, their counsel, S.R. Makanjuola, made a plea to Magistrate Folashade Kayode, requesting that the defendants be allowed to retake their plea as they had misunderstood the charges, resulting in a mix-up where they pleaded guilty to the first count and not guilty to the second count.

Upon the application, the magistrate instructed that the charge be read to them once more.

As a result, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges presented against them.

Subsequently, their lawyer urged the court to grant the defendants bail with lenient conditions.

In response, Magistrate Kayode granted each defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties each required to provide the same amount.

The case was adjourned until September 20, 2023, for the commencement of the trial.
