The Nigerian Navy Embraces Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Elevate Operational Efficiency, Announces
Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), has expressed the Nigerian Navy's intention to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to elevate and advance its operational endeavors.
Ogalla made these remarks while receiving a presentation from navy participants of National Defence College (NDC) Course 31. The presentation, titled "Artificial Intelligence and Ship Maintenance: Strategic Options for the Nigerian Navy by 2035," highlighted the navy's commitment to harnessing AI for ship maintenance and strategic advancement.
The CNS emphasized that AI's profound impact on the maritime sector was driving positive change. He underscored the Nigerian Navy's proactive stance in embracing AI to enhance ship availability, thereby elevating operational efficiency.
Highlighting the evolving nature of ship construction, he noted the increasing integration of AI and emerging technologies into ship designs, making vessels more sophisticated than ever before.
Vice Admiral Ogalla stressed the imperative for the Nigerian Navy to continuously adopt and seamlessly integrate these evolving technologies. Such a strategic approach, he suggested, is vital for the navy to maintain a competitive edge in its operational activities.
Ogalla remarked that the paper's timing was opportune, serving as a catalyst to heighten the navy's awareness regarding AI and other emerging technologies, along with their implications for operational efficiency.
He lauded the participants for their commendable efforts in crafting a roadmap aimed at transitioning the navy's maintenance system into a technologically advanced AI-compliant framework.
Additionally, he praised their innovative proposal involving the application of In-Transit-Hull cleaning, a measure that could potentially conserve significant foreign exchange by obviating the need to dock ships solely for hull cleaning.
The Commandant of NDC, Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, noted that the participants' presentation is an annual occurrence within the college's overarching defense management program.
Olotu highlighted that the selection of the 2023 topic was a conscious decision, recognizing the pivotal role of emerging technologies like AI in augmenting the navy's effectiveness across multiple domains such as ship systems, weaponry, networks, and command and control. This emphasis renders the participants' research profoundly relevant.
He firmly affirmed that the strategies put forth by the participants would undoubtedly amplify the navy's capacities and operational prowess, aligning seamlessly with Nigeria's overarching security objectives.
Furthermore, the commandant underscored the college's unwavering commitment to providing ongoing support to the navy's initiatives aimed at ensuring a maritime environment that is safe and secure.
