Snap reports boost amid TikTok uncertainty

The uncertainty surrounding TikTok's future has had a positive impact on Snap's business, according to CEO Evan Spiegel during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call held on Tuesday.

"We're not trying to draw too many conclusions from some of the increased engagement we saw when [TikTok] went dark for a short period of time. I believe that the overall environment of uncertainty is beneficial to our business," Spiegel stated.

Spotlight, Snapchat's short-form video feature that competes with TikTok, has been a key driver of the company's growth. The platform has seen increased activity from creators, with many likely to switch to Snapchat if TikTok experiences further disruptions in the United States.

Over the last year, Snap has significantly expanded its Snap Star program, onboarding thousands of creators. The number of creators posting content increased by more than 40% year on year in the fourth quarter, according to the company.

Spiegel also noted the growth of Snapchat's public content ecosystem. "In Q4, we achieved a billion public posts per month on Snapchat. So the public content ecosystem is expanding in a very positive and healthy way, and we're going to keep our focus there in terms of strategy and participation," he explained.

Snap reported 453 million daily active users in the fourth quarter, an increase of 39 million over the previous period. The company's revenue increased to $1.55 billion from $1.36 billion the previous year.
