Patient Flees Ogun Hospital Due to Unsettled Medical Bills
ABEOKUTA: Saba Elizabeth, a patient at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba Abeokuta, Ogun State, has allegedly fled the facility due to challenges in settling her medical bills following treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Elizabeth fled on Saturday as she faced challenges in settling the accrued medical bills at the hospital.
Elizabeth, who was admitted to the gynecology ward on November 11, 2023, and should have been discharged on November 16, 2023, remained in the hospital due to her inability to settle her financial obligations.
Unable to meet her medical bills, she reportedly misled hospital staff, claiming she was going to buy food but never returned. Efforts to locate her proved futile, prompting the Chief Security Officer of the medical center to report the incident to the Kemta Police Division on Sunday. The police in Kemta Division are assisting the hospital in locating the patient, as confirmed by the spokesperson of the State Command of Nigeria Police, Omolola Odutola.
We are actively investigating and reaching out to her family members to determine her whereabouts," the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, succinctly stated. Confirming the incident, the hospital's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Segun Orisajo, expressed the management's dissatisfaction with the patient's ungrateful actions. After receiving medical services, and being restored to health, the patient chose to walk away without settling the hospital bill, a decision the hospital finds disappointing.
Utilizing all available mechanisms, including the Social Welfare department, the hospital management is actively engaged in tracing her whereabouts and recovering the outstanding debt to the Centre," Orisajo added.
The management is also implementing several measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future.
