Organized Labour to Hold Press Conference Today Before Nationwide Strike
The Organised Labour has announced a press conference today (Friday) to discuss the upcoming nationwide action starting next week, Tuesday, November 14. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, shared this information during a visit to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at the Police Headquarters in Abuja.
The decision for a total nationwide strike was declared by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership after an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday in Abuja. Mobilization of members and allies has already commenced across the country.
The strike was triggered by the brutalization of NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, last week in Imo State. The Organised Labour accused the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, of complicity in the attack and handed the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace Barde.
During the meeting with the IGP, Ugboaja urged the police to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack on the NLC president, calling for their prosecution. The Organised Labour had also demanded the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor's aides in Imo State and threatened a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not met.
