Nigerian man bags life sentence for South African artiste’s murder
Onyeghani Dumkele, a Nigerian man, has been sentenced to life in prison for the alleged murder of an aspiring musician, Shaun Douglas Chabalala, 23.
According to MSN, the Pretoria Magistrate's Court also sentenced Dumkele, 37, to an additional 15 years in prison for aggravated robbery, as well as a twelve-month suspended sentence on the condition that he be deported to his native country once his concurrent sentence for murder and aggravated robbery is completed.
Captain Daniel Mavimbela of the South African Police Service said Chabalala and his friend, Given Mzamane, were lured to the Tambotie block of flats in Sunnyside, east of Pretoria, in May 2018 by a fake advertisement for a luxury camera.
He claimed the boys went there to buy the camera, carrying R14 000 in cash, only to be led into an ambush inside an apartment on the seventh floor where Dumkele lived.
"Upon entering the apartment, the victims were attacked by a group of men, and Chabalala succumbed to injuries and was declared dead on the scene," Mavimbela said.
"Mzamane testified that he forced his way out of the door and managed to escape," he added. But not before he saw two men from the same apartment who had participated in the robbery and attack on himself and Chabalala lift Chabalala and throw him out the window."
