NSIB launches investigation into FlyBird aircraft incident
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation into a serious incident involving a FlyBird HS 125 aircraft bearing the registration number 5NKAL.On December 6, 2024, the aircraft was flying from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to Kotoka International Airport in Accra when it encountered technical difficulties.
Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, confirmed this in a statement released on Sunday.
The FlyBird HS 125 aircraft was reported to have lost two engines while flying from Abuja to Accra, prompting the crew to return to Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The NSIB stated, "Our Go Team is gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and reviewing the aircraft's flight data and maintenance records to determine the root causes."
"This investigation aims to prevent future incidents and improve aviation safety. As new information becomes available, we will provide additional updates."
According to preliminary information, the aircraft, which had four people on board, was climbing through flight level 240 on its way to flight level 280 when the crew reported an engine number 2 indication issue.
The FlyBird HS 125 aircraft, which was approximately 25 nautical miles southwest of VOR station VONUK at 17:54 UTC, requested a diversion back to Abuja due to engine indication issues.
The NSIB investigation revealed that the aircraft lost engine number two while flying at flight level 230.
