Lagos apprehends hoodlums extorting levy on pedestrian bridge

The Lagos State Government has captured two suspects allegedly extorting traders and residents for using a pedestrian bridge in the Yaba area.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed this on Thursday via his social media handle.

Wahab stated that the arrests followed a viral video showing the suspects engaging in the illegal activity.

The identities of the suspects were not revealed, but they were reported to have imposed a levy of N100 on each pedestrian carrying luggage.

The commissioner, asserting that he ordered their prompt arrest, further stated that they would face charges in court.

He stated, "Following the viral video depicting miscreants extorting traders and other Lagosians on a pedestrian bridge in Yaba, I directed the Corps Marshal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps @LAGESCOfficial to swiftly apprehend the individuals and the officer involved.

"They will be promptly arraigned in court, while efforts to apprehend those evading capture will persist."

In a related development, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps apprehended at least 63 individuals on Tuesday for allegedly crossing the highway and participating in unlawful street vending.

In February, the state government issued a warning of arrest and prosecution for individuals who opt to cross major highways instead of utilizing pedestrian bridges.
