Kano conjoined twins successfully separated by saudi medical team
A successful separation surgery of Nigerian conjoined twins, Hassana and Husaina, was carried out by a Saudi medical and surgical team at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.
The surgery was conducted following the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
This information is communicated in a statement by Mohammed Alsahabi, Press Attache at the Royal Embassy Of Saudi Arabia in Abuja.
“The procedure, which commenced on Thursday morning, February 29, 2024, marked the culmination of meticulous planning and execution by a dedicated team of medical professionals.
The twins from Kano, who landed in Riyadh on October 31, 2023, underwent thorough examinations, disclosing shared regions in the lower abdomen, pelvis, lower spine, and lower spinal nerves.
"The surgical procedure unfolded across nine meticulously planned stages, spanning approximately 14 hours.
"A collaborative team of 38 consultants, specialists, technicians, and nursing staff specializing in anesthesia, pediatric surgery, urology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and pediatric neurosurgery worked seamlessly to guarantee the success of this intricate operation.
This significant surgical achievement signifies the completion of the 60th operation conducted by the Saudi program for separating Siamese twins. Over the past 34 years, this program has offered care to 135 conjoined twins from 25 countries," stated Alsahabi.
He emphasized that the successful separation of Hassana and Husaina serves as a testament to the Kingdom's dedication to advancing medical science and providing compassionate healthcare on a global scale.
Conversely, conjoined twins are identical twins whose bodies are united in the womb.
The medical nomenclature for conjoined twins is "conjoined twinning" or "conjoined siblings."
The intricacy of the case is determined by the degree of connection and the organs shared by the twins.
In specific instances, surgical separation might be contemplated, considering factors such as the overall health of the twins, the extent of their connection, and the likelihood of independent function post-separation.
