Interswitch CEO wins entrepreneur award
Mr Mitchell Elegbe, Chief Executive Officer/Founder of Interswitch Limited, was named the overall winner in the Master Entrepreneur Category of the 2023 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in West Africa on Friday.
According to a statement, Ugodre Obi-Chukwu, the Founder/Chief Analyst of Nairametrics Financial Advocate Limited, beat out other finalists to win the Emerging Category Entrepreneur.
Ernst and Young, the awards' organizers, stated in a statement that the awards were established to recognize and celebrate the achievements of outstanding and amazing entrepreneurs in the West African region.
It stated that the winners combined ingenuity, hard work, and perseverance to create and sustain successful growing businesses.
Elegbe would compete for the global title as the Master Entrepreneur winner against other winners in the same category from 50 other countries in June this year at the EY World Entrepreneur of The Year event in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
According to the statement, the EY Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dr Rose Okwechime, the founder and former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc, one of Nigeria's legendary matriarchs and iconic entrepreneurs.
"The sheer amount of effort and grit that these extraordinary people, who we call entrepreneurs, put together to create businesses or institutions not only impacts lives but changes ties and countries," said Mr Anthony Oputa, Regional Managing Partner, EY West Africa. And it is for this reason that we have gathered here today."
Otunba Richard Adebayo, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, praised the six finalists for their outstanding contributions to the country's growth and development.
In addition, Ashish Bakhshi, Senior Partner at EY, stated that the Entrepreneur of the Year award was established to recognize and celebrate exceptional men and women.
