Ihiala Police Successfully Rescue Two Individuals Accused of Murder
In a successful operation, the Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday morning rescued a man and a woman who were falsely accused of ritual murder.
Earlier in the day, a video circulated on WhatsApp depicting the two individuals being paraded naked while the corpses of the victims were being transported alongside them.
However, the police clarified on Thursday morning that they had rescued the accused persons and revealed that the case was unrelated to ritual murder. It was determined that the accused individuals were merely present in the vicinity of the incident.
As per a statement from the Police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ikenga Tochukwu, it was stated:
"At approximately 10 am on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, the operatives of the Command successfully rescued two victims and a suspect who were at risk of being lynched by an enraged mob at the Total Junction in Ihiala."
To clarify the facts, it is important to note that this is not a case of ritual killing but rather a straightforward incident of murder. Initial findings indicate that the two victims, a man and a woman, who were subjected to humiliation and public display in the circulated video, were falsely accused by the enraged mob due to their presence at the location where the murder occurred.
"Furthermore, both the suspect and the victims are presently receiving medical treatment at the hospital, while the deceased has been taken to a morgue."
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Echeng Echeng, expressed his concern and called for calm. He swiftly directed the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation. The Police will closely monitor any subsequent developments in the matter.
