How rising oil production may boost FG revenue target

Mallam Salihu Lukman, National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress, on Wednesday urged President-Elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to make internal party reform one of his top priorities.

The Kaduna politician and activist stated that it was long past time to rid the APC National Working Committee of unaccountability and abuse of office.

Lukman, in a statement titled '2023 Nigerian Presidential Election and Matters Arising,' congratulated the former governor of Lagos State, saying his election was a true reflection of reality.

The former Director-General of the Progressive Governors' Forum's warning comes on the heels of Tinubu's victory in the recently concluded presidential election.

The APC candidate received 8,794,726 votes, defeating his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who received 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 votes, respectively.

While stating that he had no doubt in Tinubu's ability to steer the political ship out of the current storm, Lukman also used the opportunity to remind him that all was not well with the ruling party's internal organ.

The APC North-West zonal chairman stated that while some internal reform measures would ensure internal competition, he would like the president-elect to hold the National Working Committee accountable, particularly in terms of adherence to the party constitution.

This came as he expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for not interfering in the election that resulted in the victory of his party's candidate.

"At this point, we must accept this trust as leaders and associates of the President-elect with a high degree of humility," he said. President Muhammadu Buhari's leadership must be recognized and thanked. In doing so, we should urge Asiwaju Tinubu, the new leader of our party, to see this golden opportunity as a call to action to continue the fight for Nigerian democracy's development.

"This will require considerable attention and focus on the development of our party, which will require some internal reform measures to guarantee internal competition within the party. Some immediate actions should be taken to ensure that the National Working Committee is accountable and that the party's constitution is followed. It is unacceptable for the NWC to operate for nearly a year without providing financial reports to any organ of the party.

"Similarly unacceptable is a situation whereby the NWC will continue to refuse to convene meetings of the National Executive Committee as provided in the constitution of the party. As the party's leader, Asiwaju Tinubu should avoid repeating the mistake of the APC's President of the Federal Republic, who limited his relationship with other party leaders to only the National Chairman and a few others. He must broaden his relationship with all party leaders and mainstream it in order to foster the institutional development of party organs.

"Over the years, we have seen how the President's limiting relationship with the National Chairman and a few leaders, on the one hand, has been abused and should be corrected immediately."
