Governor Otti of Abia State has issued a ban on the use of okada in Umuahia and Aba
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has enforced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, commonly referred to as "okada," in the urban areas of Umuahia and Aba.
This decision was conveyed by Governor Otti's spokesperson, Kazie Uko, in an official statement. Uko stated that the prohibition on commercial motorcycle operations in the state's Umuahia and Aba metropolises will take immediate effect. However, no specific reason for the ban was provided.
Uko further indicated that any motorbike observed on the streets of Umuahia and Aba engaged in such activities will be confiscated by the security authorities.
He said, "Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has directed the immediate ban on the operation of commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada, within Umuahia, the State capital, and Aba Metropolis."
Starting from Monday, August 14, 2023, any motorcycles utilized for these purposes within the townships of Umuahia and Aba will be subject to impoundment by security agencies.
Uko additionally highlighted that state security agencies have received instructions to apprehend any person found contravening the directive, with the possibility of facing prosecution.
