Google expands AI integration in search amid industry shift

Google is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into its Search engine, ushering in a significant shift in how billions of users access information online.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai discussed these developments during the company's earnings call on Tuesday, describing the evolution as a "journey" toward AI-powered search experiences.

The first major step in this transition was the introduction of AI overviews, a feature that fundamentally altered Google's traditional list-based search results. "As AI continues to expand the universe of queries that people can ask, 2025 is going to be one of the biggest years for search innovation yet," Pichai said in his opening remarks.

Pichai explained Google's strategy for integrating AI technology from its research division, DeepMind, into Search. The goal is to transform the platform into a more sophisticated AI assistant that actively browses the internet, processes web pages, and provides comprehensive responses, reducing the need for users to sift through multiple search results.

One of the most anticipated innovations is DeepMind's multimodal AI system, Project Astra, which can analyze live video feeds and respond to queries about its findings in real time. Pichai proposed that this technology could eventually be integrated into augmented reality smart glasses, potentially revolutionizing how users interact with digital information.

Another significant development is Gemini Deep Research, an AI agent designed to generate detailed reports over several minutes, effectively automating research tasks that were previously performed by users. Pichai emphasized that this feature has the potential to significantly change the way people use Google Search, allowing for more in-depth and contextualized answers rather than instantaneous responses.

Google's aggressive push into AI-powered search is largely viewed as a reaction to the rapid rise of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has become one of the internet's most popular products. The chatbot's ability to provide conversational, AI-driven responses directly challenges Google's search dominance.
