Gas Group Applauds Federal Government's Revitalized Focus on Autogas

The Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), the prominent organization representing stakeholders across the gas value chain in Nigeria, is pleased to announce its endorsement of the Federal Government's renewed focus on prioritizing autogas as a means to mitigate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The NGA views this policy direction as highly appropriate, as it facilitates the widespread adoption and utilization of gas, a resource that Nigeria possesses in abundance. Gas, whether used for transportation or powering small generators through Liquefied Petroleum Gas or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), offers an affordable, readily available, safe, and reliable fuel option. Furthermore, it significantly addresses global concerns related to carbon emissions and contributes to environmental well-being.

In pursuit of this objective, the NGA urges the Federal Government to revisit and expedite the implementation of the Nigerian Autogas Policy, which was introduced two years ago as a crucial component of the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) aligned with the comprehensive Decade of Gas Policy and Programme.

According to Mr. Akachukwu Nwokedi, the President of the Association, prioritizing gas as a substitute fuel for passenger vehicles, mass transit systems, and small generators will have several positive outcomes. This approach will foster investment and encourage capacity building, generating employment opportunities while promoting safety and sustainability in the nation's energy consumption. Moreover, it will aid Nigeria in achieving its carbon emission reduction targets outlined in 2021, as set by global environmental stakeholders. Gas, being cleaner, safer, and more dependable, should undoubtedly be the primary fuel preference.
