Apart from the deceased, four other individuals, including the mini-bus driver, managed to survive the accident, but with varying degrees of injuries.
An eyewitness traveling along the same route at the time of the incident reported that the tree split into two, crashing down on the moving bus at approximately 10:15 am, close to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) headquarters.
In the immediate aftermath, fellow motorists who witnessed the dreadful event swiftly came to the aid of the critically injured driver and the passenger whose head bore the brunt of the impact. Both were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where the passenger was later pronounced dead.
Survivors Emerge from Tragic Accident, Urgent Calls for Tree Inspections
In a distressing incident, two market women and a young man in their 30s managed to survive the accident but sustained minor injuries.
Witnesses and onlookers at the accident scene expressed sympathy for the victims and urged relevant state government agencies to address the issue of numerous trees lining the highway, suggesting the removal of aged trees to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Cross River State Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), Akak Eyo, has confirmed the tragic occurrence, identifying the deceased as a staff member from UCTH.
In another unfortunate development, a multiple-vehicle collision in the Maryland-Jibowu area, near Anthony Bridge, Lagos State, resulted in four people being hospitalized. The accident involved a container-laden truck, a pick-up van, and a motorcycle. The crash occurred due to a brake failure in the truck, leading to the driver losing control and colliding with the motorcycle and van.
The Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Babatunde Farinloye, confirmed the incident, stating that among the injured individuals, there were two females and two males.
