Ecuador landslide death toll climbs to 27

The death toll from a massive landslide in Ecuador has climbed to 27, authorities said on Saturday, adding that rescue teams are still looking for dozens of people who went missing after the disaster nearly a week ago.
A massive chunk of a mountainside broke free late last Sunday and buried sections of the town of Alausi, authorities said, destroying or damaging at least 163 homes.

Rescuers have spent the last six days looking for dozens of people among the debris in the southern town 180 miles (300 kilometers) south of Quito, with the death toll steadily rising.

The Secretariat of Risk Management reported on Friday that 23 persons had died, 38 had been injured, and 67 were still missing.

The national prosecutors' office said on Twitter on Saturday that the death toll had risen to "27 confirmed deaths after the collapse."

Seven people are killed and over 60 are missing after an avalanche in Ecuador.
Officials said rescue teams were still looking for missing individuals, but it was unclear how many.

Just over a week ago, the same area was struck by an earthquake that killed 15 people.

Following months of heavy rain, the government declared a state of emergency in 13 of the country's 24 provinces last week, enabling economic resources to be redistributed to affected areas.
