As protests intensify in Enugu, reports indicate that three individuals have been tragically shot de
Enugu State is currently gripped by escalating tension after three residents were allegedly killed during protests in the Coal City metropolis.
The demonstrations were initiated by traders who took to the streets on Wednesday morning to protest the State government's decision to seal their shops for not operating on Monday.
Regrettably, the situation turned violent, and at least three individuals have been reported shot dead amid the unfolding protest.
Video clips have emerged, displaying the lifeless bodies of two young men and a lady, further escalating tensions in the region.
Security forces were deployed to disperse the protesters, but the source of the shots remains uncertain.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, normalcy has been restored. He asserted that the peaceful protest by the traders was hijacked by unidentified elements, leading to the tragic outcome.
Ndukwe said: “Normalcy has been restored at Ogbete Market Enugu and its surroundings, following the report of protest by some traders over the sealing of their shops by the State Government and their attempt to force others, whose shops were not sealed, to close theirs and the entire market closed.
“The initially peaceful protest was hijacked and made to become violent.
"Both traders in the market and citizens are urged to maintain law and order, exhibit peaceful conduct, and cooperate with the authorities, utilizing approved channels to voice their grievances.
In response to the situation, a comprehensive investigation has been launched under the directive of the Commissioner of Police. Updates on the ongoing developments, particularly regarding reports of casualties, will be promptly communicated."
