AI startup Perplexity launches ChatGPT, Siri, Alexa rival android assistant
Perplexity, an artificial intelligence startup, unveiled its new agent-based assistant for Android devices on Thursday, positioning it as a competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT and established digital assistants such as Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.Perplexity, which is backed by Nvidia and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced that the Perplexity Assistant can handle tasks like booking dinner reservations, hailing rides through apps, and setting reminders. The tool, which supports 15 languages, is now available on Google Play Store.
"We'd love to make it available on iOS, and if Apple gives us the right permissions, we'll make it happen," a Perplexity spokesperson said.
The launch occurs as competition in the AI-powered assistant market heats up. OpenAI recently added a similar feature to its web platform for ChatGPT Team and Pro users, called Tasks.
Tech behemoths Apple and Amazon have also been improving their voice assistants. Last year, Apple integrated Apple Intelligence into Siri and expanded its functionality by partnering with OpenAI to include ChatGPT capabilities, subject to user consent.
Meanwhile, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed in December that a revamped Alexa is in development and will be available in the "coming months."
