A man is facing court proceedings for the alleged act of stealing from his own mother

On Tuesday, Tum Joseph, a 30-year-old man, appeared in an Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, facing allegations of stealing a mattress and clothes from his mother.

Joseph is being charged with three counts, which include criminal intimidation, inciting disturbance of public peace, and theft.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Esther Bishen, the defendant's mother, Bridget, who resides in Ungwan Fari, Kafanchan, reported the incident at the Kafanchan Divisional Police Station on July 7.

According to Inspector Bishen, the complainant was at the hospital taking care of her sick husband when she received information that her son had taken some items from their home.

The stolen items listed by the complainant included one mattress, two containers of herbicide chemicals, 10 yards of wrapper, and some of her husband's clothes.

During the investigation, the police managed to recover the mattress from the defendant.

Furthermore, Inspector Bishen mentioned that the defendant not only stole from his mother but also insulted her and used derogatory language towards her.

According to Inspector Bishen, the accused's actions are in violation of sections 378, 76, and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

Upon hearing the charges read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow the police to present witnesses to substantiate their case.

In the verdict, Judge George Gwani granted the defendant bail in the amount of N20,000, along with a surety of the same sum who must be his uncle.

The case was adjourned until September 5 for the hearing.
