Super Eagles need to address goalkeeping mistakes ahead of AFCON 2024, says Peter Rufai

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has emphasized the need to promptly address goalkeeping issues within the national team before the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire. Rufai shared this insight during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

Having earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, Rufai expressed optimism about the players' quality but acknowledged that there is still work to be done.

I have genuine faith in the Super Eagles, despite their current less-than-ideal form due to certain circumstances.

"The team needs thorough preparation leading up to the AFCON, especially considering their recent performances in the World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

"Any coach or technical team representing a national squad heading to such a prestigious tournament should be prepared to face scrutiny after less-than-impressive games, which the fans did not appreciate.

"We must exert more effort to rectify the subpar performances. While winning is not an absolute necessity, there must be a commitment," he emphasized.

Rufai pointed out that in football, outcomes can vary, and Nigeria must find a way to maintain its standards.

"Not every match will be in our favor; life teaches us that there are highs and lows. However, we must adhere to our own set standards.

"If we fail to prepare adequately and accept the challenges that may arise, we won't make progress. It's crucial that we understand our position beforehand."

"I am confident that the national team will be in optimal condition leading up to the AFCON and will implement all required adjustments."

"In the goalkeeping department, I anticipate modifications to be made to address and rectify the identified shortcomings," he remarked.
